Don't explain art!
One of my biggest pet peeves is when I go to a show (indie musicians are the most guilty of this) and they spend tons of time between each song explaining the meaning of the song. Where they were when they wrote it, what state of mind they were in at the time. Man unless you are Bob Dylan, I just don’t care. You want to yell “Shut up and play!” Geeze it takes more time to explain the song then to play it. Stop wasting my time!
Good art should mean different things to different people, the experience and discovery should have layers and change with time and viewing/listening. Let me experience your art my way. My good friend Klint and I were discussing this as he is a studio artist and was redoing his website. His work is brilliant on its own. Let the piece speak for itself.
Certainly once you have experienced an amazing, song, album, painting or whatever its cool to get more detail. For example the painting “American Gothic” is widely misunderstood and learning the artists intention changes the entire peace. But an artist must NEVER steal the initial experience from the observer. Let someone interpret your music however they like. Who cares. Its all about connecting anyway right?
