Connecting

Art snobs. People who have some unusual criteria for what art is, or how it should be done. Some even console themselves by saying, “even though no one appreciates or understands my art, and even though I am starving and have to work two jobs to do my work, at least I am not a sell out” Art absolutely can be used just for you, to help the artist understand something, or to get out a painful emotion but if you want to be more than and introspective hobbyist without a connection to some sort of audience it is all just posturing.

I use Jack White as an example fairly often, because he displays all the best characteristics of what I am talking about, a strong focus on good songwriting, powerful presentation, and a simplicity that even non musicians can appreciate and boy has his writing connected with the masses. It is easy to get caught up in the technical aspect of it all and do complicated work, but do you want to be a technician or an artist? I would rather hear Jack White play a power chord then Joe Satriani play his complicated riffs (case in point, if you are a non musician I doubt you will have heard of Satriani, but I would bet you have heard of Jack White). Do your best and create what you feel, not to impress but to connect. Otherwise it is all a waste.

“People can’t be just tied together. They have to connect. Otherwise, they’ll find themselves bound hand and foot.”  Ai Yazawa
